Denise Bertacchi

Denise Bertacchi is a full-time freelance writer, blogger and photographer.  She is a stringer for The St. Louis Post-Dispatch Metro Section and a reporter for Patch.com. She writes regularly for Boys’ Life (the official Boy Scout magazine) and Missouri Life.

Denise has a degree in journalism from Southeast Missouri State University and has been writing professionally since 2005.  She splits her time between writing and raising two boys, a dog and a husband.

Her first career was in the printing industry, where she’s proud to say that she was a stripper (of negatives, not clothes), a typesetter and a pre-flight operator.  In 2001 she was able to quit her job to become a stay-at-home mom.

She says her path back to journalism was inspired by her community paper and, of all things, a tomato.

“There was this front page photo of an old guy and tomato he grew that looked like Grover Cleveland or something,” said Denise.  “And I thought to myself, geez, I could write that!”  She immediately picked up the phone and asked the paper if they needed freelancers.  The editor hired her on the spot.

She has yet to write anything about Grover Cleveland or tomatoes.
